Captain Fray, (Capitão Feio in the original) is an antagonist in Monica's Gang. Bald, dirty clothes and an old cape tied around his neck. Stubborn, comical, careless, selfish, vengeful and greedy. He also has a light purple t shirt with red F on it, black pants and yellow shoes.
Personality[]
Captain Fray is Smudge's uncle. His lair is the underworld of the sewer system and leads a large army of "dirty beings", monsters made of dirt. Captain Fray also has superpowers: apart from flying, he can release dirt beams, move objects from a distance, or create objects using dust. Water works on him just like kryptonite works on Superman: Once he's wet, all his powers are gone.
His dream is to make the entire world a dirtier place to live, and also to rule it. However, Monica and her friends always find a way to stop him. Captain Fray somewhat has a good feeling towards his nephew, occasionally. He sometimes is the one to save him from any contact with water. On the other hand, there are strips in which he wants to destroy Smudge for the latter being the dirtier being in the universe, a status that Fray wanted.
Background[]
Fray appeared in a play in 1972, being revealed as an uncle of Smudge who ended up acquiring powers after being crushed by old and dusty magazines he collected when small, becoming evil and perverse. Later, he reappears in the comic version of this play, published in Monica #31, in November 1972, where the kinship and origin story of Captain Fray, who becomes a villain by being covered in the dust of his magazine collection. In January 1973, the character appeared on the cover of the magazine Cebolinha #1 (Editora Abril), but his return in the stories was in Monica #39, in July of the same year, called "E Novamente... Capitão Feio!", which since this edition, remains until today only as a villain, not giving the presence of his previous version of Uncle of Cascão.
He became the main antagonist of the two Monica's Gang games for the Sega Master System, between 1991 and 1994 (a good example of this was in Turma da Mônica - O Resgate (lit. Monica's Gang in The Rescue), from 1993, where Captain Fray is the last boss), the only time that did not appear, but had a presence in the game's story, it was in Mônica no Castelo do Dragão (lit. Monica in the Dragon Castle). In addition, he appeared in many special sagas in Monica Teen, won a Graphic MSP called Capitão Feio: Identidade released in 2017 and still participates in animated series as an antagonist in some episodes. Among his powers are the ability to shoot filth bolts from his hands, fly, and bring any jumble of rubbish to life (as he did with his minions). He has lately taken the worst of his plans to soil the world, where he always ends up losing battles to Monica's Gang, in which he is the main enemy.
Etymology[]
Captain Fray earned his Portuguese name from the term "Feio", which means "ugly" in Portuguese and fits him due to his dirty nature.
