Emerson Bernardo de Abreu (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) is a writer for Monica's Gang since 1996. He is known for his contributions to the characters Sunny and Denise, who didn't really have much of a personality (or even a default outfit in Denise's case) before he developed them more. Also his comics are very distinctive, using cynical humor and exaggerated facial expressions.
Emerson is the creator of a few Monica's Gang characters, such as Sunny's family and the evil witch Viviane. He also writes for Monica Teen, and has created many series for the comic book. In 2009, the site Melhores do Mundo, (lit. World's Bestest) a site specialized in pop culture, praised the opening comic from Chico Bento (Chuck Billy) #32 (Panini series), which was written by Emerson. "I haven't read such an amazing comic in a long time. Chico Bento #32 is a masterpiece", said Falecido Ultra, a writer from the site.
Emerson has said once that his inspiration to write comics come from many things in his routine: a YouTube video or a TV show he watched, a game he played, a fight he had with his boyfriend etc. He also used to take inspiration from Carl Bark's Uncle Scrooge comics and from Bill Watterson's Calvin & Hobbes comics too. Emerson has stated that he likes to work at night, since it's quiet, free of distractions and his head is already full of informations he saved from the day that can be used in the script of the comic. He always tries to think of the characters as "real people, just with an extra dose of drama". He loves including acid, ironic jokes in his works.
