Os Brincos Novos que a Mamae Comprou

Os Brincos Novos que a Mamãe Comprou (lit. The New Earrings that Mom Has Bought) is the title of a story originally published in Mônica #153 (Globo series) in July 1999. This story was later adapted into a cartoon episode in 2009.

The story was written by Emerson Abreu. In the English translation the name of this story is Mom's New Earrings (Portuguese: Os Brincos Madros).

Plot[]

Ms. Luísa goes to the supermarket and leaves Monica and Maggy alone at home. After Ms. Luísa leaves Monica decides to take advantage of the fact that she and Maggy are alone and calls Maggy to use her mother's makeup while she is not at home.

In the bathroom Monica and Maggy put on makeup by putting on bows and blush, Monica puts on lashes and lipstick and asks Maggy if she looks good, Maggy lies saying yes. Monica then decides to take the principal: "The New Earrings that Mom Has Bought", Maggy wonders where she heard this before so Monica breaks the fourth wall saying that was the title of the story. Maggy is then startled to think that this is not a good sign and makes Monica accidentally drop the earrings into the sink drain. Monica, afraid of her mother getting mad, takes a plunger and tries to pull the earrings from the sink drain, but ends up removing only wet hair and a candy. Maggy tries to eat the candy, but Monica hits the candy with the plunger disgusted by Maggy trying to eat this. The candy flies out the window and hits Jimmy Five's eye.

Jimmy Five enters the house asking what trouble they were in and Maggy replies that Monica took "The New Earrings that her Mom Has Bought", and Jimmy Five breaks the fourth wall talking about the title of the story. Jimmy Five tries to help Monica by advising her to open the sink siphon to remove the earring, but Monica with her super-strength accidentally pull the sink off the wall. Jimmy Five fearing Monica's mother's reaction to this destruction and decides to run away with Monica putting lipstick on his mouth to disguise himself. Maggy looks at something shining in the bathroom drain and thinks it is a firefly, but Monica ends up discovering it is the earrings. Jimmy Five asks Monica to remove the drain cover, but Monica ends up tearing a piece of the floor and throws it (accidentally) on Jimmy Five.

Os Brincos Novos que a Mamae Comprou title card

Title card

In July 5, 2009 the story was adapted into a episode, this episode debuted in a new season in which the episodes first premiered on TV through Cartoon Network before the video releases (the episode was re-released in the film Cine Gibi 4 in the same year). This was the first episode of this season. This episode, like many others in this season, uses flash animation. This episode had some changes from the comics, for example:

  • Monica and Maggy appear playing checkers at the beginning of the episode. In the comic they are playing a puzzle.
  • The colors of Ms. Luísa's clothes are different.
  • When Monica and Maggy are playing checkers, there's a extra scene where Maggy looks up and sees the title card. Monica then breaks the fourth wall explaining that this is the title card of the episode and will be gone soon. This was probably due to the fact that in the cartoon the characters could not see the titles appearing on top.
  • Maggy puts lipstick on her mouth. In the comic only Monica uses lipstick.
  • The colors of the bows were changed, Monica's bow is dark pink and Maggy's bows are light orange. In the comic the colors of the bows are pink (Monica) and lilac (Maggy).
  • Monica applies eye shadows.
  • The moment Maggy asks Monica not to touch her mother's earrings, Monica breaks the fourth wall by talking to the viewer.
  • The moment the earrings fall into the sink drain Monica has a vision where she sees herself as a baby and toddler with her mother and then has a vision of Ms. Luísa screaming her name angrily.
  • After Monica drops the earrings in the sink drain, there is another extra scene in which Monica leaves the bathroom with Maggy alone. The bathroom light goes out leaving Maggy scared until the figure of Monica holding the plunger appears scaring Maggy making her pass out.
  • Monica accidentally breaks the mirror in the sink the moment she starts using the plunger.
  • The scene involving Maggy trying to eat the candy that was in the sink drain was not adapted. As a result, Monica throws the wet hair she had pulled out of the sink in Jimmy Five instead of the candy.
  • Jimmy Five uses his wet hair to try to get Maggy to reveal to him what was going on in the bathroom. In the comic this doesn't happen, Maggy tells Jimmy Five this in a friendly way.
  • The moment Monica pull the sink off the wall, water is thrown at Jimmy Five and Maggy. There is also a leakage of water from the pipe.
  • A extra scene occurs after Monica pull the sink off the wall. Jimmy Five tries to escape, but Monica stops him by closing (and breaking) the window. She says that Jimmy Five has the fault for making Maggy scared for giving to her a horror comic book and convinces Jimmy Five to stay to help them. Maggy also appears playing with a rubber duck in this scene.
  • When Jimmy Five picks up the makeup to disguise himself he puts on a bow, lipstick and blush. In the comic he only uses lipstick.
  • In the moment Monica throws the floor over Jimmy Five, the earrings end up in Jimmy Five's ears. Jimmy Five also gets dirty.
  • The scene in which Monica tries to return the earrings to her mother does not occur. Instead, a water leak is shown flooding the bathroom.
  • The man at the bus stop was replaced by a lady (who runs away scared).
  • Ms. Luisa appears at the end with a monstrous appearance screaming for Monica's name and scaring the kids.

Trivia[]

  • This is one of the rare stories in which Samson does not appear with Monica.
  • This story was available in English on the Monica's Gang website, until the site was redesigned in 2013.
  • The plot of this story, with Monica accidentally destroying the entire bathroom by using her mother’s makeup, was later reused in 2000 in Mônica #165 in the story Presa no Banheiro Usando o Batom da Mamãe!, but without Jimmy Five and Maggy.
  • In the animated version there is a possible reference to Sadako Yamamura/Samara Morgan from The Ring, when Jimmy Five (Cebolinha) appears with the wet hair on his head.
