Os Caça-Sansão

Os Caça-Sansão (lit. The Samson-Hunters) is the title of a story originally published in Mônica #69 (Globo series) in September 1992. This story was later adapted into a cartoon episode in 2004.

The story was written by Flávio Teixeira de Jesus.

Plot[]

The story begins with Jimmy Five running away from Monica. Monica throws Samson at Jimmy Five, but he dodges the attack. When Jimmy Five thinks he has escaped unscathed Monica throws a teddy bear and knocks Jimmy Five down. Jimmy Five finds the teddy bear is harder than Samson and helps Monica look for Samson.

Meanwhile, two scientists with a German accent, Fritz and Fratz, find Samson. Fritz decides to use Samson for his experiment, but Fratz refuses, saying he wants a real rabbit and gives a coelhada in Fritz, making Fritz break the fourth wall saying that Fratz is reading a lot of Monica’s comics. After Fratz leaves, Fritz takes Samson to his laboratory and uses a ray with the intention of turning him into a walking and talking toy. The experiment goes wrong by turning Samson into a giant Kaiju-like rabbit. Samson finds Monica and kidnaps her thinking that she is its mother making Jimmy Five pass out scared. Fritz finds Jimmy Five and asks for his help to defeating the giant Samson. Smudge appears and Jimmy Five asks for his help to help him to fight the giant Samson and the two receive shrinking rays from Fritz.

Jimmy Five and Smudge go to face Samson. Smudge tries to take advantage that Monica cannot throw Samson on them and teases Monica, but he ends up being hit by Monica' teddy bear. Jimmy Five and Smudge then have a plan to tease Samson in the same way that they tease Monica by making Samson want to throw Monica in them, in the same way that Monica does. Monica is thrown, but is saved by firefighters using a trampoline to prevent her fall. Jimmy Five and Smudge then shoot the lasers of the shrinking rays at Samson causing him to shrink and get a little burned. Jimmy Five take Samson (now as a lifeless toy) and make a knot in its ear. Monica is furious to see Samson burned and with a knot in its ear and decides to run after Jimmy Five to beat him. Fritz is with Monica's teddy bear and decides to use it to repeat the same experiment he did on Samson. The story ends with Jimmy Five breaking the fourth wall by asking who will save him from Monica for the narrator (or reader).

Title card

In 2004 the story was adapted into a episode in the animated film Cine Gibi, that was fist movie of the Cine Gibi series. This episode, like many others this season, uses traditional animation with backgrounds made by Mauro Souza. This episode has been heavily altered, with many changes from the comics, for example:

  • The episode was renamed to "O Caça-Sansão" (The Samson-Hunter) instead of "Os Caça-Sansão" (The Samson-Hunters). Probably due to the fact that Smudge does not appear.
  • Fritz, Fratz and the firefigthers also do not appear. Fritz is replaced by other mad doctor who also has a German accent and the firefighters are replaced by a police battalion led by Commander Ferrão.
  • While throwing Samson and the teddy bear at Jimmy Five at the beginning of the episode Monica says nothing. In the comic Monica says "Tiro Um!" (Shot One!) when throws Samson and "Tiro Dois!" (Shot Two!) when throws the teddy bear.
  • The design of the teddy bear is extremely different.
  • There is a extra scene showing the mad doctor finishing building his machine and looking for a "guinea pig" to his experiment, like a dog and a worm that attack him, before finding Samson.
  • When the mad doctor uses the ray from the machine on Samson, Samson is shown being transformed into a fish, a rose and a soccer ball before it came to life and became giant.
  • When Samson turns into the giant Kaiju-like rabbit its look is extremely different. Samson turns purple and looks similar to the Frankenstein's monster.
  • There are a more extra scenes like the mad doctor accidentally showing his underwear to Jimmy Five before giving the shrinking ray to him, Jimmy Five being trampled by a crowd of people running of the giant Samson, Jimmy Five hiding inside the sewer meeting with Commander Ferrão, his army and the mayor, and Jimmy Five doing poses to face Samson and appearing on top of a building.
  • Samson throws Monica without Jimmy Five teasing.
  • Monica is saved by Commander Ferrão who catches Monica in the air over several other soldiers one on top of the other.
  • Samson captures Jimmy Five thinking he is his father and Monica is responsible for shooting the shrinking ray at the giant Samson instead of Jimmy Five and Smudge.
  • The reason Monica started chasing Jimmy Five in the end has been changed. Monica kisses Jimmy Five thanking him and Jimmy Five teases Monica disgruntled by the kiss.
  • The episode ends focusing on the mad doctor doing the experiment on Monica's teddy bear.

Trivia[]

  • This was one of the few comic stories that had its title changed in the cartoon.
  • This story makes reference to films like Ghostbusters (by its title in Portuguese), Kaiju films like Godzilla and Frankestein (animated version only).
  • The design of the mad doctor that appears in the animated episode was later reused for the design of Dr. Frankenstóim in the episode O Baile Frank in Cine Gibi 2.
  • This is one of the rare episodes in which shows Samson having life.
Jimmy Five with separate eyes

Jimmy Five with separate eyes

  • In the animated episode Jimmy Five appears with separate eyes in the scene where he passes out after seeing the giant Samson. This is one of the rare moments when a character appears with separate eyes in the cartoon. However, this scene does not occur in the comic.
  • The yellow dog that the mad doctor tries to use as a guinea pig in the animated episode strongly resembles Blu.
