Um Amor Dentuço

Um Amor Dentuço (lit. A Toothy Love) is the title of a story originally published in Mônica #54 (Globo series) in 1991. This story is considered classic among Monica's Gang comics and was later adapted into a cartoon episode in 2004.

In the English translation the name of this story is Toothy Trouble.

Plot[]

Monica and Maggy decide to have a picnic, but Jimmy Five and Smudge chase the two interested in food. Monica then decides to picnic in front of an old mansion so that the boys do not approach. Monica and Maggy's conversations wake up a vampire boy inside the mansion who ends up falling in love with Monica. After finishing the picnic Monica and Maggy reunite with Jimmy Five and Smudge who insult the two for not sharing food. Maggy returns home for lunch, while Monica chases the boys, but give up. The vampire boy appears and introduces himself to Monica as Vampolfo Draculano and uses his powers to levitate Jimmy Five and Smudge back to her. Monica decides not to attack the boys and the two run away in fright. Vampolfo starts to flirt with Monica and takes her to her house where he kisses her hand. Meanwhile Jimmy Five and Smudge stalk Vampolfo and discover that he is a vampire, the two try to alert Monica, but fail.

It is revealed that Monica was bitten by Vampolfo when she was kissed and she begins to slowly transform into a vampire during the night. The next day Maggy goes to Monica's house and finds her sleeping hanging on the hanger in the wardrobe, when Monica wakes up she looks at the red of Maggy's watermelon and devours it making Maggy run scared. When she leaves the house Monica ends up not being able to stand the sunlight and wears a black cloak and sunglasses. Jimmy Five, Smudge and Maggy watch Monica meet Vampolfo, Jimmy Five reveals to them that Vampolfo is related to Dracula and decide to join forces to save Monica from Vampolfo. Vampolfo takes Monica back to the mansion and reveals to her that he is a vampire and that she is also turning into a vampire and needs another bite to become a vampire definitely. Jimmy Five, Smudge and Maggy appear to save Monica and defeat Vampolfo. Jimmy Five asks Maggy to throw garlic, but she reveals that she brought onions instead. Jimmy Five asks Smudge to use holy water, but Smudge reveals that he did not bring it because he is afraid of water. Jimmy Five then shows Vampolfo a crucifix, however Vampolfo says that he is a modern vampire and cannot be defeated with this. When Vampolfo is about to attack them Mônica gives a coelhada in Vampolfo and says that she doesn't love him making Vampolfo heartbroken and reveal that without another bite Monica would be back to normal soon.

After the quartet leaves, Vampolfo receives a visit from his parents who returned from vacation bringing along his cousin Vampirila (who is a doppelgänger of Monica) who would move in with them, making Vampolfo happy again. In the end Monica thanks Jimmy Five for saving her and falls in love with him, Jimmy Five starts running away from Monica to not be kissed and Smudge comments to Maggy that Jimmy Five was jealous of Vampolfo.

In 2004 the story was adapted into a episode in the animated film Cine Gibi, that was fist movie of the Cine Gibi series. This episode, like many others this season, uses traditional animation with backgrounds made by Mauro Souza. This episode has been heavily altered, with many changes from the comics, for example:

  • Maggy is not present at any time in the episode.
  • Vampolfo Draculano ("Draculino" in the Portuguese version) had his name changed to Ivan Piro II and his design was heavily altered to look more evil.
  • The picnic scene in front of the mansion does not occur. Ivan leaves the mansion on his own.
  • The scene where Ivan meets Monica and uses his powers to scare Jimmy Five and Smudge takes place during the night.
  • Streets and also a wall around Monica's house are seen appearing, in the comic (as in most stories) there are no streets in the neighborhood.
  • When Jimmy Five and Smudge try to alert Monica that Ivan is a vampire Monica is sitting in an armchair in the living room. In the comic Monica is lying on the bed in her room.
  • Monica wears a different sleepwear.
  • Due to Maggy's absence, Ms. Luísa finds Monica sleeping inside the wardrobe.
  • The colors of Ms. Luísa's clothes are different, the design of her eyes has also been changed.
  • There is an extra scene in which Monica appears drinking juice at the table. Mr. Sousa appears in this scene.
  • When Monica leaves the house wearing a cloak and sunglasses, Monica's skin is greenish, her teeth are sharp and her eyes have dark circles. The color of the cloak was also changed from black to gray.
  • When Ivan decides to bite Monica again Monica tries to defend herself using Samson.
  • Ivan shows hypnotic powers and also resistance to garlic and holy water.
  • When Jimmy Five and Smudge appear to save Monica they are wearing Ghostbusters-inspired outfits.
  • Jimmy Five and Smudge use garlic pizza, holy water and a wooden stake to attack Ivan.
  • The end of the story has been changed, Ivan has no happy ending and Monica runs after Jimmy Five and Smudge to beat them.
