Um Doente sua Irma e a Grande Competiçao de Cuspe a Distancia

Um Doente, sua Irmã e a Grande Competição de Cuspe a Distância! (lit. A Sick Boy, his Sister and the Great Spitting Competition!) is the title of a story originally published in Cebolinha #160 (Globo series) in February 2000. This story was later adapted into a cartoon episode in 2002.

The story was written by Emerson Abreu. This story marks Crystal's (Xabéu) first appearance.

Plot[]

Sunny gets sick on the same day that the Manjericão Olympics final will take place, in which he is participating in the sport of "long spit" (a parody to the long jump). Sunny gets angry and walks out of his bed indignant at not being able to participate. In that same moment Jimmy Five accidentally kicks a ball towards Sunny's face and then enters in Sunny's room through the window to catch the ball. Jimmy Five takes Chauvy instead of the ball and then Smudge appears and enters in Sunny's room through the window saying that he has been looking for it since he teached Chauvy how to jump over the windows. Sunny questions Smudge why he teached Chauvy to jump over windows and Smudge reveals that this was a way for him to end his insomnia by making Chauvy jump like a sheep to make him sleep. Smudge also says that he taught Chauvy to burp lullabies making Sunny furious with such stupidity. The discussion of the three ends up catching the attention of Ms. Xarlene who enters in the room. Sunny then goes back to bed and hides Jimmy Five and Smudge under the bedspread. After Ms. Xarlene leaves the room Jimmy Five and Smudge tease Sunny again making him angry. Jimmy Five and Smudge then decide to leave, but Sunny asks them to stay after having the idea of putting the two of them to pretend to be him while he sneaks out of the house to participate in the Olympics. Sunny then puts a doll's wig on Jimmy Five's head and says that his mother will not recognize the disguise by breaking the fourth wall saying that this was the advantage of Mauricio de Sousa's characters having the same face.

In the moment that Sunny jumps out of the window Crystal appears, leaving Jimmy Five and Smudge (who still don't know her) surprised. Crystal leaves food and kisses Jimmy Five thinking he is her brother. After Crystal leaves the room Jimmy Five and Smudge fall immediately in love with her and start fighting with each other to decide who will remain in the disguise to receive Crystal's affections. Sunny (who was watching them outside the window) gets angry and reveals to them that Crystal is his sister. Jimmy Five then mocks Sunny by calling him brother-in-law, making Sunny furious enough to grab Jimmy Five's shirt. Immediately Crystal returns to the room after hearing them arguing. Jimmy Five hides next to Sunny outside the window, while Smudge decides to assume the disguise by hiding under the bedspread. Smudge shyly talks to Crystal and starts to shake under the bedspread making Crystal believe that Sunny is getting worse. While Crystal calls for a nurse Sunny and Jimmy Five realize that they lost the wig in the bushes and start looking. In the moment the nurse appears, Jimmy Five accidentally throws a piece of bush on Smudge's head, mistaking it for the wig. The nurse is amazed by the "green hair" and decides to give Smudge an injection. After the nurse leaves Sunny and Jimmy Five enter the room and discover that Smudge protected himself from the injection using the pillow. Crystal returns to the room again and the boys start fighting again until they all hide under the bed. The boys then watch Crystal kissing a mysterious person on the bed. After Crystal leaves the room they discover that Crystal had kissed Chauvy believing it was Sunny (Sunny tries to defend himself by saying that Crystal was without her contact lenses). Jimmy Five and Smudge fight again for Crystal's affections, but Sunny decides not to want their help anymore. The two then ask Sunny how he will participate in the spit competition inside his room.

In the end it is shown that Sunny managed to win the competition by spitting from his room to the place where the championship is taking place. In the end it is shown that Sunny managed to win the competition by spitting from his room to the place where the championship is taking place. Jimmy Five and Smudge appear watching the competition and call Sunny "show off" after he wins.

In 2002 the story was adapted into a episode, which was distributed directly on DVD along with other episodes. This episode debuted in a new season which would later also include the films of the Cine Gibi series, and like many others this season, uses traditional animation with backgrounds made by Mauro Souza. This episode had some changes from the comics, for example:

  • The colors of Ms. Xarlene and Crystal's clothes are different. Crystal's clothes even resemble her current clothes in the comics.
  • Sunny's room and bed are also different.
  • Sunny appears wearing pajamas at the beginning of the episode. In the comic he appears wearing his normal clothes throughout the whole story.
  • Sunny is much more angry in the episode than in the comic.
  • Jimmy Five's ball is different.
  • When Jimmy Five mistakes the ball for Chauvy, Sunny refers to Chauvy only as "pig".
  • Chauvy's skin color looks more brown than orange, Chauvy also appears with smudges on its cheeks like its owner's.
  • Chauvy appears much more frequently than in the comic.
  • Several dialogues have been removed as Smudge saying he wants to record a CD with Chauvy's lullaby burps, Sunny breaking the fourth wall talking about Mauricio de Sousa's characters having identical faces, Jimmy Five comparing himself to the big bad wolf disguised as the grandma after being kissed by Crystal...
  • The doll Sunny got the wig from was in a chest instead of a small table next to the bed.
  • The nurse's face and hair color are different.
  • The piece of bush that Jimmy Five throws on Smudge's head instead of the wig has a flower.
  • The pillow Smudge used to protect himself from the injection has the nurse's syringe attached.
  • When the boys hide under the bed Sunny is on the left, Jimmy Five in the center and Smudge on the right. In the comic Smudge is on the left, Sunny in the center and Jimmy Five on the right.
  • When Sunny says that Crystal is without her contact lenses he says this laughing in a normal way instead of giving a sarcastic laugh.
  • The design of the judge is extremely different.
  • There is a extra scene in which it shows Sunny spitting with another judge measuring the spit distance.
  • In the comic there are 3 other kids participating in the spit competition, in the episode no other participant appears.
  • Sunny does not teleport above Jimmy Five when they fall out of the window, thus being underneath the latter in the next scene.

Trivia[]

  • This was one of the stories to receive animation adaptation in the fastest time, taking only 2 years to the adaptation.
  • It was the first story written by Emerson Abreu to be adapted in animation.
  • This was the only story that introduced a new character to be adapted in animation.
Jimmy Five with Sunny's nose

Nose error

  • In the original publication of the story, some errors in the art occur such as: Jimmy Five appearing with Sunny's nose after putting on the wig and Sunny falling on Jimmy Five out the window instead of the opposite, as corrected in the animation. However, the nose was corrected in reprinting in almanacs.
  • This is one of the stories with the longest title. Probably because the story was written by Emerson Abreu, who usually gives long titles to the stories he creates.
  • Debatable Error: The correct translation for "sister" is Soror. However, Irmã has been used for biological relations.
